Air pumps can have a lot of uses, such as working an undergravel or sponge filter, working an air stone, or pumping into a aerating decoration. There are many different companies that make air pumps, and can make deciding on a specific one quite hard. Most pumps state an aquarium size that they are to be used for. This rating is quite useless though.

For example, if you have a 100 gallon aquarium and you just want the bubble to come out of a bubbler that is on the glass halfway down the side of the tank, you don't have to spend twice as much for a pump that's build for a 100 gallon tank.

The same can go the other way. If you have a 20 gallon tank, and you have an undergravel filter, three bubble sticks, and two aerating decorations, a pump built for a 20 gallon tank wont cut it.

Because the only measurement they usually only give is tank size, this chart will help you make a decision. Find how deep your aquarium is and match it to the left column. Then go right to find the number of aerating devices you plan on using. When you find the closest match, go to the top row and there will be the tank size rating you need your pump to have.
