Lighting your aquarium may or may not be important to your aquarium, depending on what type of aquarium you have. Freshwater aquariums generally need less light than saltwater aquariums. But it also depends on what you are keeping in your aquarium. If you are keeping live plants, you will need more light than if you were keeping just fish. The same goes for saltwater, if you are keeping live corals, you will need a great amount of light compared to if you were just keeping fish.

Freshwater aquariums are easy to light. If you just have fish, you only need enough light to light it up. I would recommend using fluorescent tubes that are as long as the aquarium, or at least the closest you can get. If you need to get multiple tubes to cover the length of the aquarium, then do so. For live plants, it is relatively simple on how much lighting you need. For plants that need low light, you should have about 2 watts per gallon, for plants that need bright light, go with 3 watts per gallon. 4 watts per gallon is too much for freshwater plants unless the tank is really deep.

Saltwater aquariums with only fish in them is easy to light. The same rule applies as for freshwater. Just have a fluorescent tube, or tubes, long enough to go from end to end, or the closest you can get. With corals, there is no general rule of thumb. There are so many factors that can effect how much light you need. Things such as how many corals you have, what types, where they are located, etc. You need to do research on the animal you need to have light for and make sure you give it the appropriate amount of light.
