These are motorized boxes that hang on the outside, back of the aquarium. These work by pulling water into the box via an uplift tube. This pulls in water, debris, and uneaten fish food. This water goes the filter media. The media is most of the time a polyester "sandwich." The sandwich is a polyester bag that holds activated carbon. This traps the debris and pollutants. This also provides a stupendous home for "good guy" bacteria. Sometimes the filter media is a large sponge and a bag of activated carbon. Or a paddle wheel. The paddle wheel is very good because it also helps get oxygen into the water. This is a mechanical, chemical, and biological filter. |
