Thermometers are very important. They tell you how warm the
water is, thus keeping your fish alive. Also, they can help when changing water.
Just like heaters, there are many types of thermometers. Here is a list of the
most common.
-
Floating Thermometer. These can have
suction cups that you should stick on the inside of the aquarium and in a
spot easy to read. If you wish, you can have them floating in the water, but
then you would have to find it to read the temperature.
-
Standing Thermometer. These are almost
exactly the same as floating thermometers except that there is a weight in
the bottom of them that make them sink to the bottom, wedging it into gravel
is best because some fish will knock it around or the current could move it
around. These too can have suction cups that do the same as floating
thermometers.
-
Liquid Crystal Thermometer. These mount
on the outside of the glass. The disadvantage is that you can't take them
off to test water temperature when changing water.
-
Temperature Control Unit. These are often used by
professionals. These work by monitoring the temperature and controlling the
heater. When the water reaches a set temperature, it turns off the heater
completely. These can help prevent a faulty heater from overheating your
aquarium and killing your fish. These are very expensive, often ranging from
$150 to $250.
