Water pumps, powerheads, and wavemakers are all very important to the fish keeping world, and in fact, powerheads and wavemakers are a necessity in reef aquariums. Water pumps also work some filters. In reef aquariums, wave makers are needed to get the right oxygen exchange. Also, it creates currents that bring food to filter feeders and moves water over all the animals that cannot move. When placing powerheads and wavemakers in an aquarium, you do not want to make the aquarium a whirlpool. Look at the picture below for the proper way to move water in a reef aquarium.
In a freshwater aquarium, water movement isn't as important, usually the filter(s) provide enough water movement for the aquarium. |
